En el corto tiempo que le tocó habitar esta tierra, Dimebag Darrell re-escribió el libro del heavy metal. Combinando el virtuosismo de Eddie Van Halen con una rítmica poderosa, emparentada con el punk o el hardcore, el guitarrista de "Pantera" y "Damageplan" logró crear un sonido individual e identificable para su música.



Darrell Lance Abbott comenzó a tocar guitarra a los 13 años de edad. "Cuando estaba por cumplir los 13, mi papá me dijo que para mi cumpleaños podía tener una bicicleta BMX o una guitarra. ...Y yo elegí la bicicleta. Pero al tiempo me empezó a gustar Kiss, y quería tener una Les Paul como Ace Frehley". Fue su padre, Jerry Abbott, un guitarrista y productor de música country-western, quien le ensenó los primeros acordes.

Con el correr del tiempo Darrell, su hermano Vinnie Paul y el bajista Rex, quienes venían tocando juntos desde su adolescencia, forman "Pantera" en 1983. Con la entrada del cantante Phillip Anselmo cuatro años más tarde, y luego de algunas ediciones independientes, graban en 1990 “Cowboys from Hell”, el disco que puso a la banda en el mapa musical. El grupo se desarma trece años máss tarde, cuando Darrell y su hermano se unen al bajista Bob Kakaha y al cantante Pat Lachman para formar "Damageplan".

R.I.P.
La noche del 8 de diciembre del 2004, en un club nocturno de Ohio donde Darrell y su banda "Damageplan" estaban tocando, Nathan Gale de 25 años subió al escenario disparando un total de doce tiros. El joven, antes de ser abatido por la policía, acabó con la vida de Darrell Abbott, mató a otras dos personas e hirió a otras dos más.
